TONALRefraction, the process of developing depictions of deeply personal musical experience, allows a person to reconnect with her spontaneous and elemental subjectivity. It has proven to be extremely empowering for individuals -- players and listeners alike -- seeking to overcome a wide variety of musical difficulties:
deficient musicality (e.g., joyless, mechanical, uncompelling, and generally unplayful playing)

performance problems (e.g., inability to read music fluently, to play in tempo or at speed, to control articulation and dynamics)

psychological issues (e.g., insecurity, boredom, terror of playing for others)

physical distress (e.g., tension, chronic pain, muscular failure)

By explicitly identifying kinds of sound perception which ordinarily impact us only at a subconscious level, thus articulating specific forces which affect our musical judgment, we are able to increase our awareness of our own responses to music. Eventually, with this increased awareness, we learn how our rich sensitivity to sound may be employed to ease musical difficulties and deepen musical satisfaction.

TONALRefraction may be thought of as a way to help individuals access what is sometimes called "the feeling" in music. The resulting pedagogical and therapeutic benefits have profoundly altered people's lives.
